Ibaba : embroidery made in Rwanda

Last week, I visited the Ibaba workshop in Rutongo and was totally amazed. I placed a customized order few weeks ago for a friend of mine who is expecting her first baby and I decided to go to the workshop to take my order instead of waiting in Kigali. I already knew their products but seeing the ladies behind the wonderful embroideries was so great.

Ibaba Rwanda is a social enterprise empowering women with a beautiful story. During the seventies, in Rutongo, Belgian nuns started to teach embroidery to help young women from the village . After the training, they could start working in the workshop earning a salary and adding an income for their families. This great initiative represented for many years a great source of empowerment for women of Rutongo . The women of Rutongo had an incredible expertise in embroidery and they were known beyond Rwanda’s borders. Having an embroidered piece from them was a must.

Visit Diani Beach

Diani Beach is a major beach resort on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, it is located 30 kilometers south of Mombasa. It can be reached directly by plane, but from Kigali it was easy to have a flight to Mombasa , and then using the ferry and road to arrive at this small paradise .

This town was just a fishing place 40 years ago, but in the 70s when tourists wishing to come to Africa found Kenya the ideal place, as there was so much strife and problems in other African countries and it was the beginning of a touristic boom.  Hotels were built along the  coast road, which was at that time  a dusty road.  Since then Diani has continued to expend without losing its charm and simple atmosphere. You will not feel that you are in a very touristic area if you avoid the big hotels.

Boho Eatery

Located in the very residential area of Karen, Boho Eatery will offer you a lovely and serene space for breakfast, brunch or lunch. The place was well recommended and was totally worth the trip. Beautiful setting in a big and luxurious garden, with a lovely patio. You totally understand the name when you arrive there : a lovely bohemian atmosphere is the best way to describe the place.

Affordable Bed&Breakfast in Kigali : Inside Afrika boutique hotel

Rwanda, and its capital Kigali, are known as an expensive destination, but affordable and budget friendly hotels exist. Inside Afrika is one of them.

Located in Kiyovu, a residential neighbourhood in Kigali, this hotel is a secret gem with nice rooms, good breakfast , a swimming pool and a beautiful view of the city. They do not offer bar or restaurant services, but Kiyovu is a lively neighborhood wth several restaurants and bars.
