Watamu is a lovely town at 2h30 drive from Mombasa. Here you will find one of the most beautiful beach in Africa . We spent 10 days there and it was a blast, we visited the Mangrove forest, the Gedi Ruins but also did snorkeling in this beautiful Indian Ocean. We choose to book through Airbnb, with our daughters it is really our favorite kind of stay. We can follow our own rhythm and during the stay we feel like really living in the city we visit !
Our airbnb was very well located, in the center of the town, not far for a lot of restaurants and with a very easy access to the beach. The host, Federica, was very kind, she helped us to find a reliable taxi to take us from Mombasa to Watamu and gave us very useful informations about what to do and where to go in Watamu.
The apartment was in a small residence, at the ground floor with about 6 others units, and a big shared swimming pool. Just a the end of the garden, a door leads you directly to the beach.
We really enjoyed the environment, the lush garden and this beautiful terrace where we spent our evenings when we were not out. The two bedrooms have air-conditionning and their own showers. One of the room opens to the terrasse and the beautiful garden.
The kitchen is small but you will find all you need to cook. At 400 meters from the residence, you will find the supermarket Mama Lucy and next to it a lot of little tinroof shops with fruits and veggies, but also fresh fish . Mama Lucy is a very basic supermarket with only the essentials and if you need more stuff, you should go to Blue Marmalade, a more modern (and of course more expensive) shop.
Near the residence, we discovered the last night the Sunset beach bar& restaurant and it was a very good surprise. The place is beautiful and food was excellent ! In the main street, 50 meters from the apartment, you will find plenty restaurants : pizzerias, swahili restaurants, bars etc. So if you don’t want to cook, it is really not a issue, you can also take a tuktuk to go elsewhere!
For 4, we paid about 100 dollars by night, but we were not in the high season, price can be different following the season. Here is the link to the airbnb. As you will see on the website, there is plenty of airbnb and various budget in Watamu, you can definitely find cheaper options ( from 15$ a room).
